Got a actually nice goatskin rawhide today, just information technology has hair. Whatever recommendations on how to remove the hair? I tried scraping with a razor after trimming it with clippers. Seems to lighten the natural color a scrap, takes some material off the skin. Also takes forever. Is there some chemical technique?

I might endeavour that. Peradventure on a minor area in the corner. Says it acts on Keratin, then it should piece of work, fifty-fifty on goat.
From what I've researched, yous either shave it with a razor, slightly bent or the corners filed down, which is what I did and so far, or soak in a chemical lye or lime solution.

Cut information technology as short as you tin can with scissors, and so sand it smooth with a palm sander.

My concern is lightening the pigment in the top layers of skin, the reason I bought this item 1. It has black and white spots. I feel that's a significant design feature. Scraping with a razor seems to make it a little lighter.

How much hair are nosotros talking about?
I kinda like the idea of leaving information technology on! ??

Tack information technology to a slice of plywood, and run across information technology in four directions, with this handy tool:
----------------------------------
OK, SERIOUSLY:
If y'all're worried near chemicals discoloring the natural dazzler of the hide, go to the dollar store and become a bag or 3 of dispensable razors, soak it well, soap it well, and shave information technology.
Time consuming, but, what the heck, information technology's going to look And so Expert when you're done.
And if it's however too thick, tack it hair side downwardly to a bee gas piece of wood, permit it get BONE Dry out, and sand information technology.

This may help if you haven't already shaved the hide.
Years ago I tanned a few deer hides to make borderland style "buckskin" jacket.
The hair will "sideslip" afterward the hide is soaked long enough which tin be determined by pulling some hair. In one case information technology has soaked long enough the hair can exist removed by placing the hibernate on a flat surface and using something with a direct edge but not abrupt, I used a thin piece of forest with the border cutting to a bevel. Yous pull the hair out by pushing downwardly and moving the piece of wood like yous were trying to scrape the hair off.

Good suggestions, I will do some experiments and report back if I acquire annihilation interesting.

Haven't done this personally, but I've read near it in one of the Firefox books - I call back volume 3. Smear the hair side with hardwood ashes, ringlet the skin upward, and soak it for a while (days? weeks? I don't recall). The ashes in water brand lye, which loosens the hair. I presume ashes left over from charcoal briquettes will work.

OTM,
Are you _really sure_ you desire to shave off that goat hair?
Of all my banjos, the only ane I have with the hair still on the hibernate is the only banjo that I practice non have to e'er"stuff" with annihilation behind the head to get the tone that I similar. It is still loud, but not too vivid and sounds perfect only as is. You may want to try it with hair for a while and evaluate the tone. If you don't like it y'all can shave it off. Simply if you lot decide you want it back, Rogaine probably own't work! I love my hairy banjo.

While this has some appeal, on this banjo, it's a pattern thing. The hair is all white, only I desire black and white spots, which in this case is only on the skin underneath. Could also exercise a halfway matter, where the pilus is clipped but non shaved.
As well, I think the hair could get messy when gluing up, equally the banjo I'thou making is a tackhead.

I was taught by a drum maker to soak the skin for a few hours and so shave it off with a Gillette/ direct razor or a fleshing pocketknife... kinda the same as if you were shaving your face.

That's the kind of info I was looking for, shave it moisture or dry? Wet makes sense, since that is more like shaving your face. Dry seems to scratch and nick the surface. Thank you!

I'm gonna get with leaving the hair on.
So much then that I'yard gonna selection up an old beater and requite information technology try.
I Dearest the look!!

Tried the easiest thing first, shaving while wet, works great, this is the way to go, later clipping off the long pilus.
Disposable single bladed razor, removed guard, carefully rounded bract edges with sandpaper, and then went over the small examination piece. It left some short hair on, but then I tacked it to a lath and finished it up. The surface seemed unmarked by this handling.

YAY!

Sounds similar y'all already did it merely yes wet for all-time results. It's also smashing for tack heads because it gives much more control if you don't want to take all of the hair off for ascetics
Mirwa - Posted - 05/27/2019: 02:twenty:fifty
When i do djembe drums, we use skin with hair on and and so shave the head later being mounted.
